Buffer overflow in network printers

A buffer overflow in the network printer’s print-protocol parser; the device may crash or run attacker code.

Summary

Printer firmware does not process long print-job headers properly. An attacker on the same network can crash the device or gain persistence.

Impact

Because printers are rarely monitored they become a hidden foothold for attackers.

Recommendation

Place printers on a separate VLAN, disable unnecessary protocols and update firmware.

Recommended actions

  • Create a printer VLAN
  • Disable RAW/LPD protocols
  • Plan the firmware update
